Salt marshes are not only important habitats for plants and animals, they also offer protection against flooding by damping the waves. Safeguarding these services provided by the marshes starts with monitoring. Possible shifts in this diverse environment are often indicated early on by signs of stress. Researcher Bas Oteman (NIOZ and the University of Twente), explored methods on the ground and from space to detect stress using efficient indicators, that can help improve the monitoring and management of European coastal marshes. Oteman will defend his PhD research “Remote sensing of salt marsh vegetation stress” on March the 18th at the University of Twente.
